I don't know why I click on some of these things, much less read them through. Claudia Gold is, IMHO, a deeply misguided person when it comes to her knowledge of ADHD. Considering that she blogs along these lines frequently using her authority as a pediatrician, her pronouncements are even more offensive. I give you "Lessons from Atticus", in which she informs us that if we slowed down and listened, we wouldn't have a problem with ADHD. About halfway down, she extols Alan Schwartz and his reprehensible article, "The Selling of Attention Deficit Disorder," which appeared in the New York Times in December. Right there you know that the whole point is that ADHD was made up by pharmaceutical companies and never existed before the discovery of methylphenidate. Nope, brandy-new phenomenon, and we drug-seekers are part of the problem. Getting her perspective is easy - she's right up front with it on her blog:
I would say that someone who is working to obstruct access to medicine that has been proven to work belongs on the list of people trying to obstruct access to mental health care, Dr. Gold. Just sayin'.
Welcome to my blog, which speaks to parents, professionals who work with children, and policy makers. Through stories from my behavioral pediatrics practice (with details changed to protect privacy) I will show how contemporary research in child development can be applied to support parents in their efforts to facilitate their children’s healthy emotional development. I will address factors that converge to obstruct such support. These include limited access to quality mental health care, influences of a powerful health insurance industry and intensive marketing efforts by the pharmaceutical industry.
