Philip Seymour Hoffman, from heroin. It's so sad. Self-treatment for mental health issues has more failures than successes. You'd think that would get the world to realize that we should be putting more effort into mental health support.

I don't think the world is necessarily responsible for each and every single casualty of mental health issues. After all, he was an adult and there was no reason to forcefully institutionalize him... he should've looked for help, especially since getting treatment wasn't a problem for a wealthy individual like himself. I do feel sorry, I just can't figure out what the rest of us could've done to help him or others like him. Other than forcing him into a mental hospital...

Oh, sorry - I guess that came out the wrong way. It just always seems to me that when these things happen, it's because someone was suffering and didn't (or couldn't) get help. For a long time, when I was younger and before I became a parent, I had all kinds of saving the world ideals. After actually getting my hands dirty with volunteer work, I realized that the more individuals you tried to save, the less good you ended up being able to do.
So this story just reminded me of how difficult it is to get the world to accept that mental illnesses are real, and anyone can have them, and simply trying to get people to cheer up isn't going to work. In fact, it can make it worse. Celebrities have an even greater pressure to present an unreal face to the world. So many expectations to live up to. It kind of triggered me, I suppose.

Lucky that we aren't rich and famous. Life is so much easier for us
