I was on my way to the psychologist this morning, and I knew we were going to talk about how I really want to go back to work, but keep throwing obstacles up to prevent myself from doing so. My Adderall prescription was finally filled (three days before I go to the psychiatrist to get the new prescriptions written, thank you very much, insurance company) and it was just kicking in, so I was thinking clearly. I remembered that two years ago, before brain surgery, I had signed up to get my cosmetology license. Between two brain surgeries and problems with a painful shoulder joint, I had given up that thought, and pushed it way into the back of my mind.
Well, I moved my arm around, testing it out, and realized that the Physical Therapy had given me lasting changes in my pain and mobility. . .and I got excited.
You wouldn't guess that I would be interested in being a hairdresser judging by my other interests and hobbies, but it's true. I'm creative, and I think of hair as another medium for artistic expression. I like to be around people, and I like to do things that make a positive difference in people's lives - and who isn't happy with a good hairstyle? I need to have some degree of flexibility in order to care for my parents, and while any job is going to limit that, one in which you can reschedule clients in an emergency is definitely better than one with hours fixed in stone.
It's going to take two years unless someone drops out of the one-year program, but it'll be a push in the right direction for me. They still have all my paperwork from the last time, and I'm good to go. This is very exciting for me!
