I've had pets all my life, and spent a number of years fostering cats. I've had to euthanize a lot of them just because I've had so many. It never gets easier. I just had to take another one to the vet this morning. This cat and I didn't even have that close a relationship (unless I had food, he rarely wanted anything to do with me) but he was very dear to my daughter. Still, when I got the news that his lethargy and loss of appetite and pallor were from Leukemia and FIV and he would probably go in a few days in bad pain, I still cried like a baby at the thought of putting him to sleep. He went quietly and quickly because he was so drained.
Skyping with my daughter was the worst. She's a four and a half hour drive away, and can't just take off for a long weekend from college. He was her cat right from day one, and she couldn't be there. He wouldn't have lasted until she could get home, regardless.
He was fully vaccinated and went to the vet regularly, but he was always fighting with other cats outdoors. We'll take the other cats in for checkups in about 8 weeks to make sure their vaccines protected them, or get them started on treatments to help keep them from getting sick for at least a while. I'm trying to think practically, but I'm still pretty emotional. As I said, it never gets easier.

i miss our first cat. was around as long as i can remember and was a really good loving pet cat. now we have a new one since kittenhood, it was rambunctious as a kitten...now it's literally a spiteful sociopath who i literally hope dies. seriously. almost the entire family despises the cat i dont know why we still have it, openly unprovokedly attacks us. i miss the first one
i will cry when my co-owned iguana dies. he's a bro and has had probably the coolest life any iguana in THE FREAKING WORLD has ever had

We're getting used to him not being around - so are all the varmints he used to control for us.
I ended up with so many cats because I was always looking for a replacement Walter, the best cat I ever had. Never quite managed to do that.
