My favorite, "ADHD is a fictitious disease." (http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/adhd.asp)
That came from a "friend" whom I haven't seen in over 20 years, and has never met my children. She suggested guitar lessons for my 6-year-old and I laughed. The average age a kid can begin to learn to handle a guitar is 8-years-old because of motor skills and dexterity needed. But alas, it was coming from someone that is in their mid-30's, still living at home with her parents, and doesn't have children -- let alone children with special needs.
While I do agree that SOME parents attempt to medicate their child to "control them" often times it has the opposite effect because they don't have the disorder. And that medications are being prescribed to SOME college students that want to study better and not having the disease.
But I also recognize that it is greatly UNDER diagnosed in others, because they don't seem to display the symptoms in a pronounced way, such as a girls who daydream their class time away. The whole "girls just aren't good at math" phrase has been around awhile. What if that's a symptom of ADHD? (http://healthland.time.com/2012/06/25/early-adhd-treatment-may-improve-girls-math-scores/) I know I suffered terribly with it, even despite having a tutor, and almost didn't graduate high school because of it.
But it's a little sad that I've received many of the comments in that article. Some from family members, until they were around my children a significant amount of time alone. And the ones that did the diet change I'm sure don't have children who also have SPD (sensory processing disorder) in which they will reject foods based on shape, texture, or even color.
