This is the fourth article in the series on Scientific American, posted February 5, 2014. Why drug discovery is hard – Part 4: Taking the fight to the “enemy”. It covers one of my favorite aspects of why a medication is better than a supplement, because it takes on the complexity of getting the exact chemical not only to the right cells, but to the right place in the body where the chemical process will play out in the specific way that will make it work effectively. Without a target, a substance goes into the body and wanders about aimlessly. This part explains how there's a strategy in designing a drug to reach the correct target. Good reads, all the parts of the series.
