This article from Scientific American uses the hook of the expense, but read it for the information about how complicated it is to figure out how to formulate them. Lots of information about how scientists discover how to merge figuring out a cause and developing a treatment - both on purpose and by accident. If you think that understanding genetics is irrelevant and molecular biology is a waste of time, this will disabuse you of that notion. There are three more parts, but SA's server seems to be having some problems loading, so that'll have to come later.
