Speaking of Sherlock (I was, a few Boards down) and I'll try for no spoilers, but Smithsonian.com just published an article called The Secrets of Sherlock’s Mind Palace. It goes into the history and technique of "method of loci," which essentially is a visual mnemonic device that creates a visualization of a "place" for memories. At first, I thought, "Oh, great - yet another memory trick that won't do me any good." Then I realized that this is pretty much the way my memory actually works. Visual association is usually the thing that allows me to pull something out of my mental files. Only problem is that my memory palace is built like the House of Leaves. *sigh*
