It occurred to me at about 5:30AM when I wasn't able to go back to sleep because my brain was so busy. There are people with ADHD who say they don't have a problem with this, and I wondered why that might be. Is it something that's related to the hyperactive symptoms? If that's the case, do people who are Inattentive not have it? Do you have it or not, and what's your diagnosis? (I'm Combined, but primarily Hyperactive. At least in my head.)

I'm combined type and feel like my brain is never silent. The moment I wake up it starts chattering away, whether that's in the middle of the night to get up and pee or when the alarm goes off in the morning. I have to distract it at night so I can go to sleep.

Same here. My brain is constantly chattering and I know of no way to shut it up. I find myself drinking coffee before bed in self defense. Sometimes it helps. The only sure-fire thing I know is Benadryl- Diphenhydramine in the generic. My husband would only let me take it if I was already in bed. It hits fast and hard.
I'm also combined. Most are.
I've had problems with insomnia since I can remember.

Years ago I would take benedryl when I was desperate for sleep, but it never lasted the night. I'd wake up at hearing a noise (usually hubby snoring) and could not get back to sleep again. A year or two ago the psych gave me a script for Trazadone, I took a very small dose at bedtime for maybe 9 months and then tried going without it. I seem to do okay now, must have reset my circadian clock or something like that.

Antihistamines of any kind give me anxiety and heart palpitations. . .not good for the sleep. Xanax is my weapon of choice.

I'm not particularly hyperactive in my ADHD (ADD?), and I typically have no trouble sleeping. Thankfully, for all the other things I have to deal with, lack of sleep (at least due to insomnia) is not one of them.

So you're diagnosed inattentive, or just not hyperactive?

I don't recall the word "inattentive" as being used. Then again, I might not have been paying attention. ;-)

I've been diagnosed as adhd inattentive, but I have lots of brain chatter. It happens all too often for me not to sleep because of the processes that are running in my head. Then again, I also have anxiety and I figured this must the main cause of it, but then again there are many reasons why I can't sleep. Here are some: I'm worried, anxious, excited, annoyed, sad, PMS-ing, hungry, too tired (!), too warm, too cold, I'm not in my own room, the pillow isn't comfy, my back hurts etc. Also I need ear-plugs to sleep. I can say that sleep (or lack of it to be more exact) is a big issue for me. I think the fact that I can't control my emotions and every mood, feeling or sensation goes over-the-top for me.
