My pdoc directed me to this slice of wonderful. www.pbs.org/kenburns/the-address/home/You can- at least for now- watch this entire documentary from the PBS site. If you are the parent of an ADHDer, it should be a requirement... for all the best reasons. The Greenwood School of Putney, Vermont has room for only fifty boys. They specialize in educating boys with ADHD, Dyslexia, Disgraphia, and Oppositional Disorder. In addition to teaching these kids using a variety of teaching approaches, they challenge the students with something kinda special. At the end of the Thanksgiving break, they challenge the students to learn the Gettysburg Address. With only 272 words, this is one of the shortest historically significant speeches. It is also hugely complex, requiring that the student understand each word, why that word was used, what the speaker intended to say, and more. For these boys- for whom the Greenwood School has been a last resort for a variety of reasons, it means a struggle to overcome speech disorders, social interaction difficulties, learning difficulties and more. I was literally in tears by the end of this wonderful documentary. Not only was I overcome by the bravery of these young men, but by their determination and accomplishment. Do yourself a favor. Take the hour or so and watch every minute of this film. Then recognize what we as ADHDers are capable of. You won't regret it.
